In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, we Floridians are used to seeing downed trees and branches lining the roads waiting to be picked up. Too often, tree maintenance is overlooked and there are several benefits to a well-kept tree beside looks. By regularly trimming your trees, you allow for proper tree growth, help control insects and plant related diseases, and reduce the likelihood of a branch falling onto a power line.
Pruning vs. Trimming
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but there is, actually, a slight difference. When you are removing dead, loose, or infected branches, you are pruning. However, if you are cutting back overgrown branches, you are trimming.
Pest & Insect Control
One of the first benefits of tree maintenance is that pests and insects are better managed. If the insects on your property are not controlled, there can be cause for concern. For example, tent worms are colonizing insects that build nests in your trees and eat the surrounding foliage. While these insects may not kill the tree, they certainly don’t help it. They can weaken the tree increasing the chance of falling branches and can also make their way into your home.
Protection
Dead and diseased branches create a major hazard to your home. By properly pruning your tree, you can avoid this issue. Also, before hurricane season, it is a good idea to get your trees trimmed. This can help save your home from power outages as well as roof & siding damage. That way, when the next hurricane blows through Florida, you will have less yard work and damage to deal with than if you had not trimmed your trees.
Proper Growth
By pruning and trimming your trees, you improve the overall health and strength of the tree. Pruning and trimming a young tree will benefit the plant, in the long run, and require less corrective pruning as the plant matures while giving the tree will have a healthier formation. If the tree loses its shape, the plant can weaken and not have the strength to support the entire tree.
The last thing that anyone wants to deal with is an issue that could have been prevented. By continuously maintaining your trees as needed, your home’s exterior will reap the greatest benefit, especially in a hurricane.
